I know nothing about how Tricorders work, all I know abot them is that there are three different types of Tricorders: Medical Tricorders, Combat Tricorders, and Borg Tricorders.
In more detail of what I said earlier. The three settings are probably vegetable, animal, and mineral (but there are probably different tricorders for different stations if a multi-tricorder hasnt been invented). t works by having a computer bank that holds the mollecular structure of each discovered vegetable, animal and mineral, scans the subject, compares it with computer banks, and either stores it if it is a new structure or says what it is on its graphs and charts. (just guessing)
good question, some sort of scanning device similar to radar maybe? I don't know.

In my theory, They Contain data banks of the molecular structure of each mineral and scans the mineral (using radar) and campares them

I never knew that. I know there were tricorders programmed for different departments. Medical, engineering and science. I think.

What is a "Borg Tricorder"...
These are Tricorders,

There is no Borg here, if there is a BORG TRICORDER, please show us where it is...

If you look at a tricorder it has three different modes it can do...
I forget what they are but it's like Medical, Engineering, Environmental...
I may be wrong but I know there are three main ones.

I believe the statement is quite accurate, but maybe in more detail there could be different setting for different types of environments for example
1) General
 - Scans the general area for unspecified things
2) Medical
 - Only scans for what pertains to medical information, i.e. blood type, injury, life sings, ect.
3) Combat
 - Analyze weapons, armaments, number of enemies, ect.
4) Environment
 - Scans for atmosphere, minerals, chemical composition...
There might even be more to it, but this is just an idea.

Im just guessing, but shouldn't there be a tactical tricorder?

That would be a combat tricorder, wouldn't it?

Ah yes, I didnt see that, I better get my glasses :'(

LOL. I prefer Medical Tricorders, as I (hope) don't expect to be in any combat situation.

I'm not sure, but I would think all the settings are on all Tricorders. to make it easier to distribute.

That is true, but you can modify the tricorder to fit the situation.
