Star Trek V

 Talis
Lieutenant Commander

Have you noticed a certain prejuduce among trekies towards The Final Fronteer?  Many say it is the worst of the films but I would disagree.  It contains so many classic scenes (e.g. the 'row row row your boat' sing-along, the Kirk/Spock 'half-brother' argument, Mr.Scots 'I know this ship like the back of my hand, and Spocks 'Please Captain, not in frount of the Klingons).  Why is there such a negative attitude towards it?

I really like this one. I think it was the first of the Trek movies I ever saw, and I will surely buy the SE DVD when it comes out here.

In ST5 it's the search for god which people find offensive.  Once they find him they don't like what they see.  They claim god is in the human heart.  Like a good person will live their lives with a smile and a bad person will live in a hellish world that his mind helped create.  The public however booed it "off stage" because it was saying that todays religions are more or less a fad of the people and that none of it is true.  People don't like hearing that what they believe in is a bunch of bull.  None of this effects my feelings toward it that it had the biggest impact storyline on society of any of them.

 Talis
Lieutenant Commander

I think people who think the film is anti-religion haven't really watched it properly.  The 'God' they destroyed was a false God, so they essentially blew up a blasphemer.

Adam Ristau
Lieutenant Commander
Chief Operations Officer, Starbase 49

Yes, but it was that end piece about god being the human heart.  For some reason people just don't like that.  I think that it was a beautiful idea.

 Ramos

No, the the general population wasn't attracted to STV simply because it lacked any good "hooks".

"Uhh...dude...they were camping...then these klingons blew up a satellite...then uhh...they killed god after some hobos took over the ship...where's the betamax at?"

And to trekkies, it launched countless debates on the potential controversy that would result from the mention of meeting a "God"...controversies which I find to be a bad joke, as it is only the h-core trekkies like us who care enough to talk about it.

 Talis
Lieutenant Commander

God point... err, I mean good point!

Keegan Logan
Lieutenant
Assistant Chief Engineering Officer, Starbase 49

i think the problem was this... did you see all the new equipment? like the "touch panels" and all that other stuff? i think that they used way too much money to create all that and they didn't have enough money afterwards to make a good plot... i'm not sure about this, but it's a sound reason... isn't it? Smile

 Ramos

heh yea that sounds like a good theory...they allocated more resources for the production of the film into set design and special effects than actual plot...

Except it was generally the same people monitering and running the star trek section at paramount, watching the scripts and keeping everything in touch. Roddenberry was alive then too, so it was just "WHUPS, THEY BAD" lol.

Sad when people you slowly come to respect mess up...again, and again, and again. Reminds me of politics.

Adam Ristau
Lieutenant Commander
Chief Operations Officer, Starbase 49

Politics at its best you mean.  LOL Yeah, I agree, but I don't think it was Gene's fault.  I think he just had bad writers.  You know how when you have an idea, and have to share it with a group it ends up so contorted it's unreconizable, well that's the way it might have been.  I just don't think the GOD of STAR TREK could do such a bad production.

God is God -and- Star Trek is Star Trek......There is no implcations, It is a Star Trek Movie. ;D Not the best but still I liked it.....

I didn't like this movie and it didn't have anything to do with the religious references. As a matter of fact that was the reason I thought I would like it. But aside from some funny moments, the movie kind of bored me. I understood all the underlying themes and agreed with them. It just didn't move fast enough for me.

I know it's sad. I own it and even watch it sometimes, but it is my least favourite one.

Kent Taylor
Captain
Commanding Officer, Starbase 49

So It's not you favorite, but it is still a Star Trek Movie (and I will watch it) so there is some stuff you like....

Star Trek is a dream for us guys and girls.  With the movie aspect of Star Trek you win some and you lose some, depending on the director.  All of the Movies William Shatner made as director have bombed.  You can't be good at everything you know.  Oh well.  I don't think of Star Trek V  being to high on my best Trek list either.

Athena Zoden
Commander
Chief Counselor, Starbase 49

Definitely. I agree. And it's true I do like all the ST movies. Even if it's only certain parts. They do have something for everyone.

 Salikar
Lieutenant Commander
Chief Science Officer, Starbase 49

I agree. But I Don't believe they had a renegade Vulcan and made God Evil Sad

Right, it was a false one. Kind of like the woman in the Devil's Due. Except that this "God" Supposedly needed a ship to escape. Which Kirk of course began questioning why would guy need a ship to go anywhere. Which is a good question. The end was the hilight of that movie for me.

Steven Smith
Lieutenant
Chief Strategic Operations Officer, Starbase 49

I liked the expression Spocks brother makes when he finds out the the god isnt god.

Athena Zoden
Commander
Chief Counselor, Starbase 49

Yeah, that is priceless. The look is "Gee I was wrong." but still almost disbelief. LOL

Steven Smith
Lieutenant
