Marcus was born on Earth to Anna, a single mother. He never knew his father, never knew his name or who he was. All his mother ever told him about his father was that they had met when she was in her last year at the Starfleet Academy and he was a member of the Federation Council; like his mother he was one of the last of the El-Aurians left on Earth. Still to this day Marcus knows nothing more and could really care less about the man that left his mother pregnant and alone.
At the age of 10, Marcus lost his mother when the Borg attacked Wolf 359. His mother, being a Starfleet officer, was stationed on one of the ships that was destroyed by the Borg. In her last act as Marcus's mother, she put him in an escape pod and jettisoned as their ship exploded, barely allowing Marcus to escape with his life. He was seriously burned across his chest and went without treatment until his pod was rescued causing the burns to leave slight scars on his chest.
Seventy-two hours after the battle, Marcus's escape pod was picked up by a Starfleet vessel sent to investigate the area. Because of the 3rd degree burns that Marcus received and the pain he experienced , he floated in and out of consciousness. That along with the emotional trauma done by basically watching his mother give her life to save his, all Marcus remembers of this time was that the next thing he knew he was on Mars in the house his grandfather, a Trill by the name of Hulas. Actually he was his adoptive grandfather since he had adopted his mother when she was a small child. Marcus was wary of the man at first, having never met him before but soon grew to love the Trill. His mother had spoken so often and lovingly of Hulas that a part of him felt as if he already knew him. And since she had arranged for him to live with his grandfather if anything were to ever happen to her, Marcus knew to trust his mother to do what was best for him even in death.
It was a year after going to live with his grandfather when the most important people, only after his mother, came into his life. . They were Jonar, Nona and their daughter, Maya. Jonar and Nona were both colleagues of Marcus's grandfather in the terraforming group that he belonged to. Marcus hit it off with the family right away, as they opened their hearts and home to the boy and his grandfather was happy to see Marcus with someone his own age. With his grandfatherÕs job, he was part of the group assigned by the Federation to work with the terraformers, it helped Hulas feel more at ease about leaving the young boy on his own, as there was no one else to help keep an eye on Marcus. This way Marcus could spend time with Maya and the two young people could keep each other company when their parents were at work. It was a solution both families were comfortable with.
Marcus's grandfather spent five years with that assignment. In that time, the bond between Marcus and Maya had grown into a deeper friendship. In fact, while Marcus never would admit it to his grandfather, the boy started to fall in love with her and Maya returned the feelings, but neither acted on the love. Their departure from each other was hard when MayaÔs family were reassigned. Yet, Marcus had had a feeling it was harder for Maya than it was for him as she was very young, innocent, and vulnerable. He on the other hand , though he had grown attached to people and cared for them, had unfortunately learned through the tragic loss of his mother that nothing lasted forever and that life had to go on. His innocence had died the day he watched the ship explode with his mother on it.
After departing from Maya and her family, Marcus picked up a new hobby. It was something that his grandfather thought he had a natural gift for and encouraged. The hobby was flying, and was not just flying shuttlecraft or other smaller vehicles that were around. He found that he had a passion for learning to fly the aircraft from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His passion for these type of aircraft focused on the fighters of the war known to human history as World War II. He could lose himself when flying and not have to think of anything else; it was a euphoric feeling he could explain to no one.
His love of flying grew so much over the years that when he turned of age, he wanted to join Starfleet just to get the chance to learn how to fly the great big starship . Yet he met with a few bumps in the road seeing that neither he nor what was left of his race were a part of the Federation. It took some work and some help from his grandfather, but he was able to get accepted into the Starfleet Academy. At the academy, his instructors were impressed , like his grandfather had been, with his natural talent for piloting. He was near the top of all of his classes, but while he was at school he didn't go out of his way to make any friends. He tended keep to himself, trying to avoid some of his fellow classmates who at times took it upon themselves to give him a hard time about the fact he and his race really had no home planet.
It was this reason that Marcus took up studying the Japanese martial art forms of Kendo ,"The Way of the Sword" and Aikido, "The Way of the Harmonious Spirit". It was to help, which it did, to relieve the stress that he felt when his classmates hounded him. It helped him greatly. However, as much as to the meaning of these two types of martial art are, Marcus does not follow the teaching exactly much to the annoyance of his sensei.
After graduation, he was looking forward to getting assigned to a front line combat vessel. However, once again life was not working in his favor and his first permanent assignment was to Deep Space 14 as a runabout pilot. He was not happy about this assignment at first, but over time Marcus came to enjoy his assignment and soon became well known in the sector as the pilot you wanted when it was hitting the fan. After a year or two of constantly honing his skills, he was one of the best pilots in Starfleet. Soon Marcus got orders to be assigned to a ship and although he was once again hoping for a front line combat ship it didn't happen. Command decided to send him to the Asimov, a Galaxy-class Starship .
